Common Networking Terms



Node:


Each device in a network is called a node. This node can also be a computer, laptop or printer or any input and output device.



Host:



A network host is a computer or other device connected to the network. Network host provides information resources, services, and applications for users or other nodes on the network.


 

Network Interface Card (NIC):


The network interface card is a circuit board or card, which is installed on the computer and connects to the network.



Network operating system (NOS):



It is an operating system that coordinates the activities of many computers. It is designed to run on the server and enables the server to manage data, users, groups, security applications, and other networking tasks.



LAN (Local Area Network):



Local Area Network This is a computer network, which interconnects a limited area computer like home, school, computer lab or office building.




WAN (Wide Area Network):


Wide Area Network This network covers a wide area, in which any telecommunications network using the telecommunications lines gives a connection across metropolitan regional, national or international boundaries.



Protocol:



The protocol is a set of rules and standards, which define a language that can be used to communicate originally to devices.



IP (Internet Protocol):



Internet Protocol is the principal communication protocol of Internet Protocol Sumpter that relay datagrams across network boundaries. Its routing function encompasses internetworking and essentially establishes the Internet.



TCP (Transmission Control Protocol):


Transmission Control Protocol is a network communication protocol designed to send data packets over the Internet. TCP OSI Layer has a Transport Layer Protocol.



FTP (File Transfer Protocol):



File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol, which is used to transfer computer files from one host to another host on the Internet, such as a TCP based network.



DNS (Domain Name System):


A domain name is a distributed naming system for system, computer, service or other resources. DNS translates internet domains and hostnames into IP addresses. The name of the DNS web browser's address bar automatically converts the web server that hosts these sites into an IP address.
