The most widely used technologies are FDDI (Fiber Distribution Data Interface), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and MDS (Switched Multi-Megabit Data Service) to develop a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) network.

The purpose of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) was to achieve clear audio and video results during a video conferencing. The properties of ATM have enabled it to become the basis of comprehensive area data networking.

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) combines the characteristics of circuit switching and packet switching, which allows it to transfer real-time data.

FDDI is a standard for data transfer on LAN, which can be extended to a range of up to 200 km. FDDI can help to support data transmission of several thousand users. This is why it is known as MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) technology.

FDDI uses optical fiber for its infrastructure, which is why it is known as the Fiber Distribution Data Interface.

When data is transferred through a connectionless service, we use the technique called SMDS. Service without connection means that the data is transferred by storing information in the header and it reaches its destination independently through any network.

When the data is transferred using the technology of SMDS, it also makes small data packets like ATM. Although SMDS allows the transmission of data in large geographical areas as datagrams (data packets of unreliable data service providers).

Nowadays MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) has been installed using link infrared and microwave signals.


How Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) works:




MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) usually comes between LAN and VAN. This usually applies to link geographically spreading LANs. Therefore, the aim of MAN is to develop a communication link between two independent LAN nodes.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) is usually installed using optical fiber. The network is installed using the router and switch. A switch is a port which is usually active in handling the filtration of the data coming in the form of a frame.

Any switch acts as a dual port, on one hand, it handles the filtration of data and on the other hand, manages the connection.

The router is another device to facilitate the network connection. A router helps data packets identify their path. So, in other words, this data keeps track of the transfers. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) usually operates in the area of ​​up to 50 km.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) comes between LAN and VAN. Therefore, the efficiency of handling data increases, while at the same time saving a cost associated with installing a wide area network.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) provides centralized management of data. This enables you to add many fast LANs together. Telephone companies around the world have facilitated the transfer of data with the help of an underground optical fiber network. These optical fiber increase the efficiency and speed of data transfer. The optical fiber enables you to access approximately 1000 MBps of speed.

If you develop a WAN of 1.45 MBPS, then its cost is higher than what you provide. Whereas when you install the Metropolitan Area Network, it gives you the lowest cost of 1000 Mbps speed.
